CHOREOGRAPHY UPDATES:
Please make sure you are practicing outside of rehearsals. When you come to rehearsals there are multiple things needed to be worked on including dance technique and training so we will not always have the time to go over every step for each individual person. I will be scheduling one-on-ones with every member where that will be possible.
What to keep in mind concerning choreography:
1. PRACTICE makes PROGRESS. Do not wait until rehearsals to go over steps and practice. There is simply not enough time to accomplish a great deal if the whole time is spent constantly reviewing steps.
2. LISTEN to the music. Salsa music is danced to six count timing with breaks and pauses for syncopated steps and accents. You should be training your ear to listen for the clave and percussive instruments, unless otherwise noted by Director for choreography purposes.
3. Practice your BASIC. This will never get old or go out of style. You must have a strong foundation in your Salsa basic so that you are able to progress more quickly without hesitating on each foot.
4. UNDERSTAND the MUSIC. Understand the storyline of the music and use that to connect to the audience. Dont just dance steps. Live each step, Convey each movement. When in rehearsals, I feel as if nobody is attempting to connect to the music, everyone is simply trying to get though till the next part. This is how you begin to cheat movements and miss steps.
Sooooo, overall, Focus on the choreography, utilize your time wisely during rehearsals, practice at home, listen and understand the music and practice your basic essentials. I am always here to help, however I am not a crutch. You girls should have the goal in mind of bieng able to run the sections and pieces that we have been over together as a team. Try not to overuse videos and time during rehearsals as a learning crutch.
Remember, when you make a mistake, never try to catch up to the music, always wait till the next "1" of the following step to begin again.
There is also a facebook page for Phoenix Dance36 (PLEASE "LIKE" THE DANCE COMPANY PAGE)
ALSO, you ladies have a Facebook Group for Expresiones Del Alma. I update the group page frequently, especially if you are looking to keep up with practice times with me in the studio and/or classes.
Choreography Concept/Music/Research:
The music for this routine is: Primera Rumba by La India & Eddie Palmieri. (NOT THE LIVE VERSION) The concept is based on the lyrics of the song. The song has heavy conga beats and strings, so we will be utilizing lots of body movement, turns, flowing and artistic movemnts. Everything has to be feminine and sensual. This routine has to exemplify what it means to dance rumba first in your heart.
You will find the music in the Expresion Del Alma page of this website (click here).
It is very important that you begin listening and understanding the music composition and rythymns of Latin based music. Timing and Technique are fundamental in Dance and in order to improve and continue to progress, you must understand how music is structured and how to dance to the music. Latin music is danced primarily to the percussion instruments, However, the more advanced you develop your skills, the more you can dance to various instruments creatively and on time.
We will also be dancing a lot of afro cuban movements.
